April 20, 1932 - August 5, 2019
Our beloved mother, grandmother, aunty, and friend, Bertha "Birdie" Szigety, reached a gentle end to a dynamic life on Monday, August 5th, in the care of kind nurses at Bevan Village in Abbotsford.
Born Bertha Freida Wittmann, on April 20th, 1932, in Sprague, Manitoba, to parents Anna and George Wittmann. She came to Abbotsford as a child, where she met and later married Edward Szigety. They shared a long and happy life together. She was a tough cookie and a mother to everyone she met whether at the pool hall in the Atangard Hotel, (which she ran for years) or the art classes she both attended and taught. With a steady hand and a keen eye for colour, Bertha's art was a focal point in her life. Many knew her for the beautiful Ukranian eggs she coloured and painted and the incredible garden she grew. Always generous, she had a jar of homemade dill pickles for every guest or neighbour and was quick to invite anyone to stay for a meal.
Bertha is survived by her daughter Lin, son Darcy, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She will be laid to rest with her husband of 61 years Ed, and her parents. Dad always said he would be waiting for her by the Pearly Gates.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to the Kidney Foundation of Canada. Bye Mom, love you bunches!!!! Always in our heart!!
