A family of five Muslims were mowed down on Sunday (June 6) by a pick-up truck driven by 20-year-old Nathaniel Veltman. Four of the five family members died as a result, with a nine-year-old family member suffering serious injuries. Salman Afzaal, 46, his 44-year-old wife Madiha Salman, their 15-year-old daughter Yumna Salman and Afzaal’s 74-year-old mother lost their lives. Nine-year-old Fayez is expected to survive the attack.
The family was waiting to cross the road at an intersection on a dry, clear day in the city’s northwest end when a black pickup mounted the curb, struck them, then sped off. Police believe that the family was targeted because they were Muslim.
