The driver of this van was killed after crashing into a Ford pickup on Hwy. 11 on Tuesday afternoon.

A 51-year-old Coquitlam man died in a two-car crash in Abbotsford that took place at about 2 p.m. Tuesday.

The man, whose name has not been released, was driving a Dodge Caravan north on Highway 11 when he collided with a southbound Ford pickup truck at the intersection of Bateman Road. Const. Ian MacDonald said it appears that the driver in the truck was trying to make a left turn from Hwy. 11 onto Bateman at the time.

The 26-year-old Abbotsford woman driving the pickup was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Initial reports that there was a passenger in the Caravan have since proved incorrect.

MacDonald said drugs or alcohol were not factors in the crash.

"Speed, driver error and the cycle of the lights will be central components of the investigation," MacDonald said.

Highway 11 northbound was closed to traffic for several hours, as investigators worked at the scene.
