Crews were on the scene of a fire on St. Moritz Way in Abbotsford on Wednesday afternoon. The fire took place in the basement suite at the back of the home.

Fire damaged an Abbotsford basement suite today (Wednesday), and the single mom and her son who live there do not have insurance to cover their losses, according to assistant fire chief Dave Rivett.

Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service was called at around noon to the home at 2685 St. Mortiz Way in east Abbotsford.

Rivett said the fire began in the living room of the home's basement suite, but crews were quickly able to contain it before it spread to the upper floor.

He said the tenants of the suite were not home at the time, but the owner, who lives on the top floor, was alerted to the blaze when the smoke alarm went off.

Rivett said the living room of the suite suffered extensive damage, and there was smoke damage throughout the house. Emergency social services has been called in to assist the mom and her son.

Four fire trucks and 16 firefighters were on the scene, as well as members of the Abbotsford Police and BC Ambulance. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
