Two men were taken to hospital today (Tuesday) after being beaten during a home invasion in an Abbotsford apartment building.

Const. Ian MacDonald said police received a call at about 10:30 a.m. from a neighbour who said fighting could be heard in a nearby suite.

Police initially logged the call as a "domestic in process," but discovered different circumstances when they arrived at the Abby Glen Apartments at 2929 Tims St.

MacDonald said two tenants of the fifth-floor suite, ages 29 and 24, were suffering from cuts and bruises, and were taken to hospital for treatment.

The door of their suite and a bedroom door in the apartment had both been smashed in.

As of Tuesday afternoon, police were still trying to piece together what happened, but neighbours indicated the tenants, who had lived in the building for about three months, were troublesome.

"It looks like (the incident) was more along the lines of a drug debt collection ... or an assault," MacDonald said.

He did not know how many assailants were involved and what gang affiliations the parties had, if any. No guns or knives were used in the attack, he added.

An eviction notice was posted on the door of the suite following the incident and listed "drug-free housing" rules that tenants must abide by, including not engaging in violent or drug-related criminal activity.

Any violation of the terms is grounds for a 48-hour notice of eviction, the notice stated.
