The week of Jan. 16 in photos

Winter arrives with an blast, with icy temperatures and high winds.

It was a wild week of weather in the Valley.

Beginning with a snowfall last weekend, the following days saw plummeting temperatures and howling winds, making driving conditions extremely treacherous, especially on Sumas and Matsqui prairies.

On Tuesday, public schools were closed, and again on Friday with the threat of freezing rain.

By Thursday, the Arctic front was passing, although the effects of the winter storm continued to create news stories, including a tree falling into a house, and a broken water main flooding downtown Abbotsford streets.

Friday afternoon saw a brief period of freezing rain, which changed to rain as temperatures climbed well above zero overnight and into Saturday.
