Both Mission and Abbotsford are taking steps to conserve water amid a provincial drought.
According to a news release from the City of Mission, Stage 3 water restrictions are in effect starting today (Aug. 4) for the Abbotsford Mission Water and Sewer Commission (AMWSC).
During Stage 3, several watering activities are prohibited in the region. Those activities include watering lawns and boulevards, filling or adding water to a swimming pool, washing vehicles, pressure washing and more.
“Due to high water demands in the summer, watering restrictions ensure that Abbotsford and Mission residents continue to have a high-quality water supply capable of supporting a growing population,” the news release reads.
In Stage 2, activities such as lawn sprinkling were either restricted or allowed but are now prohibited under Stage 3. Lawn sprinkling is prohibited but hand watering using a hose equipped with a spring-loaded shut-off device is acceptable.
Other restrictions are in place for commercial car washes, commercial flower and vegetable farms, golf courses and sports fields.
All vehicle and boat washing is prohibited — with the exception of safety reasons — while commercial car washes can only operate if they have recirculation systems.
Golf courses can’t water fairways but can water greens and tees normally. Meanwhile, community and school sports fields that are sand-based may be watered on alternate days while soil-based fields are allowed twice a week.
Abbotsford and Mission entered Stage 2 of water restrictions on July 21 with the expectation of moving to Stage 3 on Aug. 4.
According to a previous news release, water-use restrictions will be extended to the end of October.
