A group of close to 50 people gathered for a protest on Wednesday (March 31) afternoon in front of the Abbotsford School District office to express their anger about the new mask mandates for students.

The group, made up mostly of women and children, met at 1 p.m. and held signs to speak out against the new policy. Event organizer Lisa Engh also addressed the crowd and thanked them for coming out and showing their support.

Literature was also handed out at the event, including a flyer from the Hugs Over Masks group. The people protesting today are not directly associated with them. There was also a flyer published by the Druthers group.

The B.C. Teachers Federation had been calling for mask mandates for many months, and the B.C. Ministry of Education made it mandatory for all B.C. students in Grades 4 to 12 to wear them on Tuesday (March 30). Masks have also been strongly encouraged but not required for students in Kindergarten to Grade 3.
