An elderly pedestrian who was out for his morning walk was struck and killed Tuesday morning in the 31300 block of Blueridge Drive, just east of Townline Road.
The 74-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was hit by a white GMC Safari van at about 6:30 a.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene. The collision occurred near Harry Sayers elementary.
Const. Ian MacDonald said the man was crossing from the north side of the road to the south side, but it was not yet known whether he was in the nearby crosswalk at the time.
MacDonald said the 63-year-old male driver from Abbotsford remained on the scene and co-operated with police. Alcohol has been ruled out, but investigators are trying to determine whether other factors – such as speed or inclement weather – might have played a part.
Blueridge Drive was closed to traffic in both directions for several hours while patrol division officers and collision reconstructionists investigated. Harry Sayers elementary remained open, with access to the school co-ordinated via Townline Road.
