Strings of purple lights have been placed in all Abbotsford Police Department (APD) buildings until the end of April to remember victims of domestic violence and to give hope to those living with abuse.
The APD’s domestic violence unit has placed the lights in support of the Purple Light Nights campaign during the Prevention of Violence Against Women Week (April 15-21) and Victims of Crime Week (April 22-28).
In addition, the Women’s Resource Society has provided the APD with silhouettes of real victims of domestic homicide that will also be on display at the Justice Way and Marshall Road locations.
These silhouettes are “silent witnesses” and are yet another important way to remember and create awareness, said Const. Ian MacDonald.
He encourages citizens and businesses to support the efforts of the Abbotsford/Mission Violence against Women in Relationships (VAWIR) committee.
The Mission RCMP and Abbotsford Crown counsel are also supporting Purple Light Nights. For more information about the campaign, visit purplelightnights.org or wrsfv.ca.
