Police investigate dumping of suspected drug-lab materials

Almost 30 containers of suspected drug-lab materials were found Wednesday night in Abbotsford.

Local residents reported the dump on Bates Road just south of Harris Road in rural west Abbotsford at about 9 p.m.

Const. Ian MacDonald said members of the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) and Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service went to the scene and cordoned off the materials.

MacDonald said there were 28 containers – eight 45-gallon drums and 20 with a volume of 4.5 or five gallons.

RCMP clandestine lab members were also notified and were at the scene on Thursday morning to determine the volatility of the chemicals and to ensure their safe removal by an environmental services company.

MacDonald said the chemicals will now be analyzed to determine exactly what they are, but they are believed to be the components of synthetic drugs, such as methamphetamine or ecstasy.

The APD continues its investigation, and does not have any suspects at this time.
