The Abbotsford International Airport (YXX) and the City of Abbotsford is reminding drone users to be aware of no-fly zones and rules that limit where the devices can be flown.
In addition to a suite of other rules governing drones, a no-fly zone restricts their use within nine kilometres of any airport, including YXX. Stretching east all the way to Sumas Mountain, the no-fly zone includes the vast majority of the city’s urban area.
Transport Canada regulates drones, formally called “unmanned aerial vehicles” (UAVs). Before flying such a device, users must understand the rules that apply, the city said in a press release issued Wednesday.
There are also weight restrictions on UAVs, and a Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC) is required for all commercial use operations but is not required for recreational use of drones weighing less than 35 kg.
