More staff being hired at Fraser Valley seniors homes

Number of care hours for residents lags behind provincial targets

The province confirmed Monday that is is hiring more staff for residential facilities in Abbotsford, Agassiz and Chilliwack to get closer to provincial standards of care, but there’s still no news on a long-promised residential care project.

Adrian Dix spoke at a media event Monday to trumpet the new hires and investment, which were previously announced in last year’s budget.

Dix noted that Fraser Valley care facilities were failing to meet – or event to get close to – standards set nearly a decade ago that outline the number of care hours for each resident. While the target is 3.36 daily care hours, Dix said many Fraser Valley facilities are close to 2.75 funded hours. That means that, each day, residents are receiving more than half an hour less care than the province says they deserve.

Total funding in Abbotsford, Agassiz and Chilliwack will amount to more than $4 million. Subsequent years will see additional funds for more staff.

Dix was also asked about other potential health care announcements, including languishing plans to build new residential care facilities in Abbotsford and the possibility of urgent care clinics. He said he hoped to return to the area for funding announcements in the future, but wouldn’t speak to any timeline.
