A man who was sentenced last year for the assault of an Abbotsford sex-trade worker has been deported back to his home country of Zimbabwe, Africa.

Const. Ian MacDonald said Wilson Mulenga Chibesa, 24, exhausted all avenues of appeal and was deported on Jan. 30.

He previously pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm and two counts of drug possession, and was sentenced on June 24, 2011 to jail and probation.

The charges stemmed from an incident in the early-morning hours of Sept. 25, 2010, when Chibesa and a 44-year-old woman met at an apartment in the 33500 block of South Fraser Way.

He offered her money in exchange for sexual services. When she asked to be paid, Chibesa pushed her to the ground and stuck fingers down her throat to stop her from screaming.

The victim was later treated in hospital for injuries to the lining of her esophagus, and she reported the incident to police.

Chibesa was then located, and a subsequent search of his Abbotsford residence turned up small quantities of cocaine and marijuana.

MacDonald said Chibesa had been in Canada on a visa, and spent one semester studying at a local post-secondary facility, although he wouldn't identify which one.

He credited the victim for her courage in speaking out and said, although she was a sex-trade worker, "it could have been anyone" who was attacked by Chibesa.

"By speaking out and working with police, she (the victim) not only ensured that Chibesa was held accountable for this incident, she prevented the possibility of any other victims in Canada," MacDonald said.

In addition to his time in Abbotsford, Chibesa also lived in Kamloops for a period. He received a speeding ticket there in 2007, and was charged with two counts of breaching his probation in September 2011 after he had been released from prison.
