A family restaurant in Hope had its business licence pulled for refusing to ask for proof of vaccination.
District of Hope issued notice Oct. 7 to Rolly’s Restaurant that the licence had been suspended for six months by its business licence inspector, for failing to comply with provincial health regulations.
Restaurants are required to ask patrons for their vaccination status by showing the BC vaccine card prior to entry.
Rolly’s has refused, according to several reports by customers, and the restaurant continues to operate.
Fines of $100 per day could be levied. Fraser Health could also obtain an injunction.
Rolly’s has a loyal following in Hope, but Facebook posters were split on the restaurant losing its licence.
“Sad to see Rolly’s being made an example of,” wrote Julie Taylor on the Hope Bulletin Board FB page. “I am sure there are other businesses/restraunts also not adhereing to the health orders, but to shut them down for six months!! 6 MONTHS!!!! That is really uncalled for!! I am sure there are other ways the government can get its point across!”
“I stand beside Rolly’s Restaurant,” added Shannon Johnson. “Asking for vaccine passports is part of our medical privacy.”
Others supported the removal of the licence.
“Yep, they do deserve this recognition for being defiant,” wrote Susan Balmer. “Rules are rules for ‘all’ to follow, not just some people.”
“Sadly the owners are listening to the wrong people on the vaccine issue,” added Tim Tann. “They think the anti-vaccine group is going to hurt their business and that is just not the case. Their reputation is without question.”
