A historical heat wave has shattered previous high temperature records in Abbotsford.

Abbotsford had never recorded a temperature in the 40C range until Sunday (June 27), when thermometers reached a sweltering 41.7C.

However, that record was then eclipsed the very next day (Monday, June 28) when Abbotsford reached a temperature high of 42.9. That is now the hottest temperature ever recorded in Abbotsford.

Saturday (June 26) also set a new record for Abbotsford, as it reached 39.6C. The previous recorded high in Abbotsford was 38C, which was achieved on July 29, 2009. Abbotsford also reached 37.9C on July 11, 2007.

The past several years highest temperatures include: 32.8C (July, 30, 2020), 31.9C (June 12, 2019), 35.6C (Aug. 2018), 36.4C (Sept. 4, 2017) and 36.3C (July 5, 2015).

The hot weather this week caused a number of issues and caused the city of Abbotsford to open up several cooling centres to help locals beat the heat. Several areas reported brief power outage issues and a number of local businesses closed early due to the challenging circumstances.

The Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre also reported that on Monday night they had run out of ice and requested donations to ensure patients could keep cool. According to a source, several local companies stepped up and were able to deliver enough ice to avoid any major issues.

The Abbotsford School District closed early due to the heat and the final two days of the school year on June 28 and June 29 were cancelled.

The forecast for next week does appear to offer a respite from some of the overwhelming heat, as temperatures will drop to below 30C for most of the week. Saturday is forecasted to reach a high of 31C and Sunday is expected to reach 30C.
