Chilliwack Search and Rescue volunteers were paged Sunday night after 8 p.m. for a hiker that had been missing for several hours in the Chilliwack River Valley.

He still had not been found by Tuesday at evening, and SAR personnel with experience in extreme terrain were being called in.

The missing man’s hiking partners told the search team over the weekend they last had eyes on him around 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

SAR officials were told the man “had done a lot of hiking” but the steep and rocky terrain he likely encountered in that area might have been considerably more challenging than gentler hiking terrain.

He was last seen in the high alpine below Baby Munday Peak, which is part of the Cheam range, and accessed by Airplane Creek.

“We searched Sunday night and have continued throughout the day today,” said SAR search manager Doug Fraser on Monday.”

Valley Helicopters and RCMP helicopters were also assisting in the search efforts, with SAR volunteers trying to spot the man by air.

“We do not believe he was prepared to be out overnight,” said Fraser.

Friends have identified the man as Gordon Sagoo, and have created a fundraising page to benefit the Chilliwack Search and Rescue team in his honour.

They’ve called the page Trail Runners Support for Chilliwack Search & Rescue, through

They set a goal of $500 and had more than doubled that amount by Tuesday afternoon.
