Forest fire burning on Vedder Mountain near Yarrow

Provincial fire crews have been called out to fight the blaze in the remote area

A large fire is burning on Vedder Mountain in the Yarrow area of Chilliwack – not far from the Abbotsford border – and reports indicate that the Coastal Fire Centre has been called out to fight it.

Reports of the fire first started coming in at about 10 a.m. on Thursday. Because the fire is on provincial land, it is out of the jurisdiction of local fire departments – including Abbotsford and Chilliwack – and is in an area that is inaccessible.

The blaze is estimated to be 50 metres by 50 metres, according to the B.C.'s Wildfire Management Branch, which reports that 12 personnel and a helicopter are responding.

The Coastal Fire Centre fights wild fires, particularly in areas that are steep and rugged, often using water bomber aircraft.

People on social media are reporting they can see a large plume of smoke coming from the mountain.

The fire is not threatening homes or other buildings.
