Five days in jail for fleeing from police

An Abbotsford Police officer fired his gun, aiming for the vehicle's tire, as Christopher Trethewey sped away.

An Abbotsford man whose vehicle was shot at while fleeing from a police officer last November has been sentenced to five days in jail and a 12-month driving prohibition.

Christopher Ryan Trethewey, 34, previously pleaded guilty to fleeing from a police officer and stealing a vehicle. He was sentenced Friday in Abbotsford provincial court.

Charges of obstructing a police officer and possession of a break-in instrument were stayed.

Trethewey was near a grey Dodge pickup truck with a trailer loaded with items in the 3400 block of Juniper Crescent on Nov. 4, when he was approached by an Abbotsford Police officer who recognized him.

When the officer called Trethewey’s name, he got in the truck and began speeding away. The officer then fired his gun, aiming it at one of the tires.

A bullet was later found imbedded in the side of a nearby house. Police are still conducting an investigation into the incident.

Trethewey was found 45 minutes later, driving a Ford Focus – verified to be his – in the area of McKee Road and Cassiar Avenue.

The stolen pickup was later found off-road on Eagle Mountain, and the trailer was missing.

Trethewey is still facing charges stemming from an incident on Nov. 27 in Chase, B.C. in which he allegedly stole an automated banking machine from a gas station.

Trethewey was arrested in a nearby gravel pit, where he was allegedly attempting to pry open the ATM. His next appearance on that matter is Feb. 14.

He is also scheduled to go to trial Feb. 23 in Chilliwack for one count of possession of stolen property and one count of breaching his bail conditions on Dec. 18, 2010.
