Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for the Fraser Valley, with gusts expected to reach 90 km/h overnight and tomorrow morning.
“The threat of the strong wind gust will end later Thursday morning, but it will remain blustery for the remainder of the day,” the agency states.
The wind warning was issued for the western Fraser Valley, including Abbotsford.
Such warnings are issued when there is a significant risk of damaging winds, according to Environment Canada.
The agency’s website indicates that the winds are expected to reach their peak between 4 and 8 a.m.
The last big wind storm in the area was in November, when winds reached between 60 and 80 km/h and resulted in power outages to more than 6,000 customers in Abbotsford.
An even stronger storm took place in late August, when almost 30,000 customers lost power, some for more than 48 hours. Trees were knocked down throughout the community, resulting in the temporary closure of several roads.
At the time, Environment Canada said the storm was the worst in nearly 10 years, with winds gusting up to 94 km/h at Abbotsford Airport.
