Tina Stewart, executive director of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association (ADBA), has announced her plans to run for city council in the November election.

“Abbotsford needs strong leaders who come to the table with an understanding of the struggles and needs of the families and businesses who are trying to strive in our community,” said Stewart.

Stewart said her position as director of the ADBA has allowed her to gain knowledge on city policy and keep up with current issues. Stewart, if elected, would plan to maintain her position at the ADBA, citing precedence in other communities.

A resident of Abbotsford for 26 years, Stewart said she cares about the community, and that it is important to ensure small- and medium-business thrive, job opportunities flourish and Abbotsford continues to grow in a direction that offers a community that entices and encourages families to come to, and stay in, Abbotsford.

Stewart, 47, along with her husband Jim, has four grown children and one pre-teen.

Stewart has volunteered with various community groups dealing with domestic violence, adults and children with disabilities, the Abbotsford Hospice Society and substance abuse issues.
