Eight Abbotsford Police officers have been recognized for their work in reducing the number of impaired drivers on the road.
The officers have been named as members of Alexa’s Team, named for Alexa Middelaer, who was killed by an impaired driver in 2008 when she was four years old.
The team consists of RCMP and municipal officers committed to reducing the number of impaired-driving deaths in B.C.
Officers must complete a minimum of 12 impaired-driving investigations in a year in order to qualify for the team.
Alexa’s Team members from the Lower Mainland were honoured Thursday at the Justice Institute of B.C. for their work in reducing alcohol-related crashes.
The Abbotsford Police officers who were honoured were: constables Leisa Shea, Kim Jones, Michael Oakman, Jon Courtney, Jenni Teixeira, Jordan D’Alessandro, Brandon Lanthier and Adam Flore,
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Alexa’s Team. Over the past decade, the team has grown from 20 officers to almost 2,700 across B.C.
A total of almost 95,000 impaired drivers have been taken off the across the province during that time.
