A 60-year-old woman and her four-year-old grandson were airlifted to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a crash on Highway 1 in Abbotsford on Thursday morning.
Sgt. Peter Thiessen, spokesperson for Fraser Valley Traffic Service, said the pair were travelling in a 2000 Ford Focus driven by the woman's husband, 53.
The vehicle was pulling a utility trailer loaded with lumber and was headed eastbound in the slow lane between McDermott Road and No. 3 Road when a tire blew on the trailer.
As the Abbotsford driver was pulling to the shoulder of the road, the trailer began to fishtail and partially re-entered the slow lane, where it struck a passing 1994 Hino truck.
The 21-year-old male driver from Chilliwack was not injured and was able to safely pull over.
The utility trailer then became disconnected from the Ford and crossed the eastbound lanes, rolling and coming to a stop on its roof in the grassy median.
Highway 1 was closed between Whatcom and No. 3 roads while emergency crews were on the scene, but re-opened at about 12:15 p.m.
Thiessen said speed and road conditions do not appear to be factors in the collision, but the mechanical condition of the trailer and the weight of the load have not yet been ruled out.
