Abbotsford voters have been taking advantage of the advance polls this election.

According to information released by Elections B.C., advance polling is up by 28 per cent across the province.

This year, a total of 380,741 people cast their ballots in advance, compared to  297,201 in the 2009 provincial election.

Don Main, communications manager for Elections BC, said advance voting turnout has been on the rise since 2001.

This year in Abbotsford-Mission, 3,049 of the 35,989 eligible voters used advance polling. That's 8.5 per cent.

In Abbotsford South, 3,625 of 35,657 eligible voters (10.1 per cent) used the advance polls while in Abbotsford West, 4,441 of 31,401 eligible voters  (14 per cent) voted ahead of time.

Main said from the start of the campaign, Elections BC has been trying to inform the public regarding of  its voting options, including voting by mail, at advance polls or at the electoral offices.

"I would like to take some credit that our public awareness campaign was the only thing, but I don't think that's solely it."

He said many voters are just realizing that it is more convenient to cast their ballots ahead of time.

Until the final voter turnout is calculated after the polls close, it's unknown as to what the overall percentage of voters used advance polls this election. However, Main said it has been on the rise each time.

In 2001, about seven per cent of total voters used advance polls. In 2005, that rose to 11.5 per cent and in 2009 it was 17.5 per cent. That number should be higher this election, depending on how many people vote overall.
