Elizabeth (Bessie) Heyes of Abbotsford celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday, Oct. 21 with a party at Menno Hospital.

Heyes said she was excited about marking such an auspicious occasion.

“It’s wonderful. I didn’t think this was going to happen,” she said.

The celebration included a big cake, and lots of cards and balloons.

Heyes was asked about her plans for the future.

“Nothing planned, but things are bound to turn up. They always do.”

Heyes was born and raised in North Vancouver, and met her husband, an engineer from England stationed in Vancouver as a naval officer, during the Second World War.

The couple lived in England for two years and then moved back to B.C.

They have one daughter, who lives in Seattle.

Heyes moved to Abbotsford in 2007 and lived in a condo, where she enjoyed running fitness classes.

She was also a hospital volunteer for 20 years, doing visits and office work.

Heyes moved to Menno Hospital in July 2011.
