Abbotsford truck driver dies a hero

Baldev Grewal pushed his co-worker out of the way as an SUV careened towards them.

An Abbotsford truck driver who died in a collision in Calgary on Friday is being remembered as a hero.

Baldev Grewal, 44, pushed colleague Balwinder Sidhu out of the way as an SUV careened towards them, according to Calgary Police Service. The two had legally parked their semi trucks in a median to exchange tie-down chains just before 2 p.m.

After hitting Grewal, the northbound SUV then travelled into the southbound lanes and struck another vehicle before coming to a stop.  Police say neither speed nor alcohol are considered to be factors in the crash.

Grewal and Sidhu were co-workers at a trucking firm in Surrey.
