Police are concerned with a rash of vehicle thefts that occurred in Abbotsford from May 1 to 12.
During that period, 37 vehicles were stolen, many in west Abbotsford. Almost one-quarter were taken on a single day – May 12.
Const. Ian MacDonald said the number compares to 18 thefts for an average 12-day period at this time of year.
He said most of the vehicles stolen were over 10 years old and did not have an immobilizer or anti-theft device.
The vehicles stolen are broken down into: 34 per cent Hondas, 13 per cent Fords, 11 per cent Toyotas, five per cent Mazdas, five per cent Dodges and 32 per cent other.
Members of the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) will provide free anti-theft devices to owners of pre-2002 Honda vehicles and pickup trucks at various times and locations.
MacDonald said there will not be a booth set up, but officers will approach drivers of those vehicles.
In addition, registered owners of pre-2002 vehicles without immobilizers and who are Abbotsford residents can attend the community policing office at 34194 Marshall Rd. to obtain one.
