Abbotsford groups benefit from civil forfeiture funding

Women's Resource Society of the Fraser Valley to receive $100,000

Abbotsford is receiving $127,330 in proceeds from the civil forfeiture office (CFO) to support the prevention of violence against women and youth crime prevention initiatives.

Three local groups will be receiving the money.

The Women's Resource Society of the Fraser Valley (Warm Zone) will get the majority of the funding ($100,000). It will go towards buying a van to help with reaching vulnerable women in the community.

The Abbotsford Police Department's domestic violence unit will use the funds to buy a vehicle equipped with seats suitable to safely transport children and their parents in high-risk cases involving domestic violence.

The police are also receiving $5,000 to buy anti-theft devices for the vehicle theft prevention program.

The CFO is self-funding and proceeds of forfeited property are used to compensate victims and support local crime prevention and remediation efforts through the use of grants.
