In their time of need, Abbotsford Police officers were supported by fellow law enforcement members. This week, it was their turn to return the gesture.
Three Abbotsford Police Department (APD) cops travelled to Pierce County in Washington State to pay their respects to Daniel McCartney, a sheriff’s deputy killed in the line of duty on Jan. 8.
They attended a funeral held Wednesday afternoon at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, following a procession through the city’s streets.
“When we lose a brother or sister in emergency services, it’s important for us to come together and show support for each other,” Sgt. Judy Bird of the APD said. “This officer risked his life and he deserves to be treated like the hero that he is.”
The News Tribune reported that McCartney was responding to a home invasion in the small town of Fredrickson when he was fatally shot. He had been chasing two armed and masked men when he shot one, who later died from a self-inflicted wound.
The other alleged robber reportedly shot McCartney and has been charged with first-degree murder.
The solemn ceremony likely felt all too familiar for the three attending Abbotsford cops, as it came less than two months after their city’s own procession and regimental funeral.
On Nov. 19, fallen APD officer Const. John Davidson was honoured, following his Nov. 6 slaying.
First responders from around Canada, the U.S. – including Washington State – and even the chief and members of Davidson’s former UK police detachment attended that memorial.
“It was an honour for us to have so much support form our community and local officers but especially from those who travelled to come and support us in our team of need,” Bird said.
