David Lovely was arrested earlier this year following a robbery at TD Canada Trust.

A man who robbed a local bank in May was sentenced on Wednesday in Abbotsford provincial court to a three-year jail term.

David Ryan Lovely, 37, pleaded guilty to one count of robbery. Two other counts of robbery were stayed.

Lovely walked into the TD Canada Trust bank at South Fraser Way and Trethewey Street on May 25 at about 4 p.m. and gave both verbal and written commands for cash.

Once he left the bank, he headed east along South Fraser Way. Police believe he left some personal items at a nearby business before entering the bank and had gone to retrieve them.

When police arrived, witnesses informed them of Lovely’s whereabouts.

Lovely refused police commands to surrender and tried to escape into a bush area along South Fraser Way.

Police said he reached into his pockets and back of his pants, despite orders to keep his hands in plain view.

The two officers who were first on the scene had only their pistols as weapons, but they did not fire at Lovely.

A third officer who arrived on the scene used a beanbag gun to fire five rounds that subdued Lovely.

At the time of his arrest, he had more than 10 prior convictions for a range of offences, including robbery, break and enter, and  assault causing bodily harm.
