The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) took 52 excessive speeders and 36 impaired drivers off the roads during a recent crackdown.

The department released statistics on Wednesday (Jan. 3) from an initiative – titled Project Joyride – in October and November by the traffic enforcement unit to target high-risk driving behaviours.

APD media officer Const. Art Stele said officers focused on excessive speeding and street racing in areas of concern identified by citizen complains.

He said 21 shifts were dedicated to the project over the two months.

• seven drivers arrested and charged with dangerous driving;

• 281 violation tickets issued; and

• 104 vehicles impounded.

“We know that speed is one of the main factors in fatal collisions. The danger of excessive speeding and street racing poses a significant risk to the public,” Stele said.

“AbbyPD is committed to ensuring high-risk drivers are removed from our roadways. Our traffic enforcement officers continue to be ever-present and innovative in ensuring safe roadways.”
