A man charged in relation to a hit-and-run collision in Abbotsford that critically injured a pedestrian in April 2022 has received a one-year conditional sentence and a one-year driving ban.

Joseph Heschuk was sentenced Wednesday (Aug. 30) in Abbotsford provincial court after pleading guilty to failing to stop at an accident involving bodily harm.

A conditional sentence means Heschuk will serve his time in the community under court-ordered conditions.

Heschuk, 25, was charged in February of this year in relation to hitting Dale Lylyk on April 26, 2022 as he was walking on Hillcrest Avenue just east of Clearbrook Road.

Heschuk drove away, and two days later police released photos and video of the suspect vehicle – a Toyota 4Runner.

The following day, police announced that a man had come forward to say he was the driver.

A GoFundMe campaign that was started for Lylyk indicated he was on life support at Royal Columbian Hospital and had to undergo surgery on his brain and to remove part of his small intestine.

The page stated that Lylyk, 39, was kept in a coma for several weeks and then had to learn to eat, talk and walk again.

His mom, Michele, has continued to provide updates on social media about her son. She has indicated that he has permanent ear damage and faces ongoing challenges with his brain, speech and memory.

The GoFundMe campaign is now closed.
