$8.4M announced for new Montrose bus exchange in Abbotsford

Funding of more than $8.4 million was announced Wednesday (Aug. 28) for the Montrose Avenue Transit Exchange in Abbotsford.

A press release from the federal government indicates that, of that amount, the federal and provincial governments are each providing $3.37 million, while BC Transit is contributing almost $1.7 million.

Mayor Ross Siemens said the city is grateful for the investment.

“As the cultural and economic Hub of the Fraser Valley, transit plays an essential role in ensuring residents and visitors in Abbotsford can get around our community,” he said.

Siemens said not only with the new transit exchange have all the standard amenities, it will support the city’s future transit network between Highstreet Shopping Centre and University of the Fraser Valley.

The exchange is located on Montrose Avenue between McDougall Avenue and South Fraser Way in the area around Archway Community Services.

The project was identified as a priority in the city’s 2018 Transportation and Transit Master Plan and in the BC Transit Future Action Plan.

The design includes 10 bus bays, new universally accessible sidewalks, new shelters and benches, improved lighting, and new landscaping.

Other plans include bicycle lockers, charging stations for electric bikes and vehicles, and designated parking spaces for passenger drop-off and pick-up.

Construction is expected to being this fall and be complete by summer 2024.
