Abbotsford’s Cade Smith picked by Minnesota Twins

MEI student drafted in the 16th round of MLB Draft

Abbotsford’s Cade Smith is officially property of the Minnesota Twins.

The Grade 12 MEI student was selected by the Major League Baseball team today (Wednesday) in round 16 of the MLB Draft.

Smith was selected in the 16th round, 466th overall to the American League team.

The right-handed pitcher has also committed to the University of Hawaii, and will have to make the decision to turn professional or follow through with his scholarship.

Smith, who also starred for the Abbotsford Cardinals, has represented British Columbia on the national stage and Canada on the international stage. He claimed gold with Team BC at the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games, and also suited up for the Canadian junior national baseball team last year.

He also achieved a spot on the Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame’s Wall of Fame in April.

The selection marks the second straight year that an Abbotsford baseball product was selected in the MLB draft, after Carter Loewen was picked by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 40th round of last year’s draft.
