Darius Commodore was handed a conditional sentence for his role in the death of Jordan Christopher Smyth near Chilliwack on Halloween night 2019.
Commodore was sentenced in BC Supreme Court in Abbotsford on June 6 after pleading guilty to the lesser charge of unlawful confinement in the 2019 case involving the homicide of Smyth.
Smyth's body was found on Soowahlie First Nation after a shooting overnight on Oct. 31 or in the early hours of Nov. 1, 2019.
Commodore, 24, and David Geoghegan, 30, initially faced charges of first-degree murder in the death of 26-year-old Smyth, which were reduced at trial to lesser charges of manslaughter, and kidnapping for Geoghegan.
Smyth's body had been found in an open area on Soowahlie land. The location was off Sleepy Hollow Road on the reserve, about a kilometre from Cultus Lake, on Nov. 1, 2019.
Commodore, and Geoghegan, were arrested on June 25, 2021, after extensive investigation by police. Commodore was arrested in Abbotsford, and Geoghegan in Chilliwack.
The pair of arrests involved officers with the Abbotsford Police Department, the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team, the Integrated Police Dog Services, RCMP Air 1, and the Chilliwack RCMP.
Smyth had been known to police for relatively minor incidents prior to his death, and police said the incident was targeted.
Both Commodore and Geoghegan were well known to RCMP as prolific offenders with lengthy and serious criminal records.
Commodore's conditional sentence of two years less a day will be served in the community, with three years' probation and a firearms ban.
