Don Curtis, sales manager, said they are the main sponsor for the Magnuson Ford Mariners FC, which is a soccer club for all ages from U5 to adult, so hosting this event was quite fitting.

Arriving around 11am, lucky participants were excited for the shoot-out to begin.Contestants were selected to play via a draw representing world cup soccer teams.

Round one got underway around 11:30am where six contestants successfully scored from the 25 yard line earning them a spot in round two at the 35 yard line. There were only two people left to compete in the final round were David Burke and Greg Vegt. The final task was to score from the 35 yard line with the Magnuson mascot standing in front of the net.

Finalists

Being the only two to advance to the final round they were given additional world cup attire, David Burke chose a Brazil t-shirt and Greg Vegt chose a Brazil scarf. Burke representing 'Team Nigeria' shot first and his attempt was successful. Needing to score to extend play, Vegt representing 'Team Columbia' kicked the soccer ball and was oh-so-close as it just caught the outside of the post and bounced out.

No one went home without a prize as each contestant was awarded with a McDonald’s gift certificate and Greg Vegt as runner-up won a Team Brazil soccer shirt and two complimentary tickets to see a concert at the Abbotsford Centre to go along with his scarf and gift card.

David Burke jumped with joy upon quickly realizing he’d been deemed the winner by out-shooting all other contestants and taking home the grand prize valued at $1950. Included was a 40-inch Flat screen TV and Sony sound bar compliments of Magnuson Ford, $300 worth of beer compliments of Mt Lehman Liquor Store, $250 worth of pop and snacks compliments of Save On Foods, a $150 gift certificate to Greek Islands in Abbotsford and a World Cup replica Jersey compliments of Soccerwest, value $100.

The question everyone wanted to know was where Burke played soccer and he humbly laughed and stated he’s only a soccer fan and doesn’t play. He is a hockey player though and said, “I noticed the small net is similar to the net we use in hockey so that probably helped.” He went to say he really wanted the Brazil jersey and loves it!

Gabe Marshalok, employee at Magnuson Ford assisted by drawing contestant names during the event and said “it was nice getting the community involved and bringing them to our newly renovated dealership. Not everyone is aware that we are open for business, but we are.”

Overall it was a fun event to be a part of and I enjoyed the sun, the excitement and the sportsmanlike people I was surrounded by. More photos of the event here. The winner of the Online World Cup Soccer Contest will be announced next week.
