Summertime event at South Abbotsford Church

Come enjoy a summertime concert with music from the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra, directed by Calvin Dyck and three young Fraser Valley artists, Hanna Williamson, Chelsea Rus, and Paul Williamson, who have been studying music at universities across Canada.

The year-end concert Welcome Home is on Saturday June 20, 7 p.m. at the South Abbotsford Church. Admission is $15 at the door.

The show will open with Elgar’s expansive Nimrod from the Enigma Variations. Then Rus will perform the moving aria O Mio Babbino Caro (Oh My Beloved Father), an expressive plea of a girl to her father as family tension threatens to separate her from the one she loves.

Suppé’s classic Light Cavalry Overture will sweep you into the excitement of galloping horses, and Saint-Saëns’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, a piece of dramatic extremes, will show off the virtuosity of violinist Hanna Williamson.

Another highlight will be Beethoven’s delicately bright Piano Concerto #4 with Paul Williamson playing on a Steinway piano specially imported from Vancouver for the event.

The talented string section will be featured in Orange Jam and Victory as they dance along with the rhythms of their bows. Choreographed by Anton Lykhanov from Kiev, these two pieces will be featured in the upcoming Canada Day parade.
