Heritage fair features 150 entries

Tradex will host students from six Fraser Valley School districts.

Canadian history comes alive at a regional heritage fair in Abbotsford on April 9-10th.

More than 1,200 students from six Fraser Valley school districts have participated in their own school’s heritage fair during the past three months.

From that group, 150 students have been selected to participate at the 17th annual Fraser Valley Regional Heritage Fair, sponsored by the MSA Museum Society, at the Tradex in Abbotsford, according to Cindy Rowell, the Coordinator of the Fraser Valley Regional Heritage Fair.

“Students have chosen projects that reflect some aspect of Canadian history and will be judged on their project display, their oral presentation and their ability to share what they have learned through the research of their chosen heritage / history topic,” Rowell explained.

“This Regional Heritage Fair is part of a national initiative to encourage youth to celebrate Canada’s history and heritage. Every year I am amazed at the wide variety of topics, and the excitement and enthusiasm that students have as they share their research information at the heritage fair,” she added.

Students will have their projects reviewed and adjudicated by a panel of judges on Tuesday, April 9th during the morning and afternoon.

On Wednesday April 10th, from 6:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., students from Hope, Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Mission, Langley, and Surrey, will showcase their heritage / history projects in a public open house display.

At 7 p.m., the students will make their grand entry into the awards ceremony lead by First Nations drummers. Dignitaries from the community, politicians, and corporate sponsors will be presenting awards to students in over 20 categories as well as Provincial Achievement Awards.

“Five students will be chosen at the regional fair to move on to represent their school and the Fraser Valley region at the Provincial Heritage Fair being held on July 4th to July 8th in Victoria,” said Rowell.
