Bass-baritone Danile Lichti performs in Abbotsford this Saturday in a benefit concert.

A concert to raise money in support of Syrian refugees takes place at Bakerview Church (2285 Clearbrook Rd.) on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m.

The concert features three pieces by composer Franz Schubert.

Juno-nominated Daniel Lichti from Wilfried Laurier University will sing the song cycle Wintereisse, accompanied by a Toronto pianist Sandra Mogensen.

Lichti has recorded Wintereisse for Analekta Records and has performed around the world, establishing himself as one of Canada’s finest bass-baritones.

Lichti has achieved renown at major Bach and summer festivals, performed oratorio and opera internationally, gained acclaim as a recitalist and recording artist, and taken the stage with many of Canada’s leading opera companies.

Performance highlights for Lichti in 2015-2016 include the title role in Elijah with the Grand Philharmonic Choir and Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra, and Winterreise in Hagen, Germany with pianist Roland Pröll and in Winnipeg for Prairie Performances.

This May will mark another of his many guest appearances at the Bethlehem Bach Festival in Pennsylvania.

The concert will also feature Calvin Dyck performing one of Schubert’s Sonatina in G Minor published after his death, and Trinity Western University vocal faculty Alison Nystrom performing Shepherd on the Rock with clarinetist Christopher Lee.

Bakerview Church is hoping to raise at least $27,000 to sponsor a Syrian family of four through the blended visa office referred program. This is a cost-sharing program with the Canadian government.

They are working with Mennonite Central Committee, and the process is expected to take three to five months.

The church, which has formed a committee to prepare to receive the family, is also collecting good used furniture and other household items for the family.
