Abbotsford Children’s Theatre (ACT) presents the play version of a holiday tradition – The Nutcracker ballet – on Dec. 8 and 9.

The production is based on the original story of Clara, who waits a visit from Godfather Dross on Christmas Eve because he brings such unusual gifts. This year he brings a Nutcracker, which comes to life after everyone goes to bed.

Adventures begin when the mice and toy soldiers engage in battle until the dreaded Mouse King turns up. He stole a crown from the Nutcracker years ago and now the battle ensues to get it back.

In the second act, the audience is taken to the Snow Kingdom, complete with dancing snowflakes and the Snow Queen.

Clara finds it all a bit chilling as she explains the story of the stolen crown. She is given a key to the Land of Sweets, where she meets Sugar Plum fairies and waltzing flowers.

When the Mouse King turns up again, the Nutcracker enlists help to regain the crown.

‘This is a wonderful show for young audiences to enjoy the excitement of live theatre,” says Freddy Latham, artistic director of ACT.

The production features 38 actors between the ages of 7 and 16. Public performances are Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, 32315 South Fraser Way.

Tickets are $12 (plus service fees). Visit abbotsfordchildrenstheatre.org to purchase tickets or for more information.
