Les Friesen (in red vest) and his son Rod take a prototype raft out for a quick trip.

Rafters are needed for the Upper Fraser Valley Habitat for Humanity's first ever Habitat Hurry Up Raft Race.

The event is scheduled for July 14 at Albert Dyck Park and the fun begins at 1 p.m.

Registration is required in advance and while several groups have expressed interest, few have filled out the registration forms.

Organizers have extended the deadline to enter to Friday, June 14.

The group is hoping to attract as many businesses or associations as possible to participate in the event.

Teams that decide to enter will construct a miniature house in any style they choose and place it on an eight foot by eight foot raft (supplied by the organizers).

The mini-house can have the company's or group's name and slogan on it.

Two members of the team will then paddle the raft on a set course at Albert Dyck Park. Trophies and prizes will be handed out to the winners and for cutest, ugliest and most creative houses.

The fundraiser benefits Upper Fraser Valley Habitat For Humanity which  builds homes for those in need.

Groups must register ahead of time by calling 604-859-2475 or email to treasurer@habitatufv.ca. The deadline is June 8 and the cost is $250.
