The official launch of the Abbotsford Purple Light Nights campaign takes place Friday, Oct. 6.
The event starts at 11 a.m. in the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association (ADBA) office at 2615 Montrose Ave., and guests are invited to wear purple to promote the start of the campaign.
Purple Light Nights originated in King County, Wash. in 2006 as a way to “shine a light” on the issue of domestic violence, using the symbolic colour of purple.
In Abbotsford, businesses and homes are invited to display a string of purple lights throughout October to symbolize that “domestic violence has no place in our community.”
A string of 70 LED indoor/outdoor lights is available to purchase from Blackwood Building Supplies (33050 South Fraser Way) for $20.
Speaking at the launch event will be Mayor Henry Braun and MLA Darryl Plecas. Hip hop artist Saint Soldier will preview his new song about domestic violence.
The Purple Light Nights campaign is organized locally by the Abbotsford Violence Against Women Relationships committee.
October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
