The Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society is in need of drivers willing to make the trek from Abbotsford to the cancer clinic at Vancouver General Hospital.

Drivers are reimbursed for mileage – currently at 41 cents per kilometre.

The society was formed in early 2016 to replace a service previously operated by the Canadian Cancer Society.

Volunteer drivers pick up patients at their homes and take them to treatment at cancer clinics in Abbotsford, Surrey and Vancouver.

The society currently has more than 130 volunteer drivers and made almost 6,300 patient trips in 2017.

The organization recently received a donation of $1,500 from the family of the late John MacInnes.

MacInnes was passionate about providing free transportation for cancer patients. He and founding president Garth Pinton formed the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society in 2016.

MacInnes became a cancer patient himself and died June 30, 2017 at the age of 83.

Envision Financial Services recognized MacInnes posthumously with the Simple Generosity Award, and presented a cheque of $1,500 to his family. In turn, they donated it to the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society.
