The Brain Injury Association of Canada (BIAC) says brain injury is at critical proportions.
Globally, acquired brain injury is the leading cause of death, surpassing multiple sclerosis, HIV/AIDS, spinal cord injuries and breast cancer combined.
BIAC says an estimated 1.5 million Canadians are living with this disability throughout, and each year more than 100,000 Canadians will become brain-injured.
The annual indirect and direct costs to the Canadian economy are more than $3 billion.
In June, BIAC aims to:
– increase awareness of acquired brain injury in the general population; and
– increase awareness of the importance of brain injury prevention, research and support for those living with an acquired brain injury.
The BIAC website is biac-aclc.ca.
