Abbotsford-based association provides variety of services.

The Fraser Valley Brain Injury Association in Abbotsford is spreading awareness of the services it offers, with June being Brain Injury Awareness Month.

The association provides a variety of services for people with acquired brain injuries and their supporters in the area from Langley to Boston Bar.

The office is located at #201-  2890 Garden St. More information can be found on the website www.fvbia.org or by calling 604-557-1913.

The Brain Injury Association of Canada (BIAC) says brain injury is at critical proportions.

Globally, acquired brain injury is the leading cause of death, surpassing multiple sclerosis, HIV/AIDS, spinal cord injuries and breast cancer combined.

BIAC says an estimated 1.5 million Canadians are living with this disability throughout, and each year more than 100,000 Canadians will become brain-injured.

The annual indirect and direct costs to the Canadian economy are more than $3 billion.

In June, BIAC aims to:

– increase awareness of acquired brain injury in the general population; and

– increase awareness of the importance of brain injury prevention, research and support for those living with an acquired brain injury.

The BIAC website is biac-aclc.ca.
