A $17,000 cheque was recently donated to the ALS Society of B.C. from proceeds of the Abbotsford Police John Goyer Memorial Golf Tournament presented by Flaman Fitness.

The cheque was presented by Sgt. Rick Stewart, co-chair of the golf tournament, to the ALS Society to support living with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), most commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The tournament has raised over $132,400 for ALS BC since its inception 10 years ago.

The tournament is held each July in memory of Const. John Goyer, who passed away from ALS in April 2006.

Goyer and his police partner had attended a domestic dispute where the suspect was uttering threats and assault. Goyer received injuries to his head, neck, back, left shoulder and right knee, which in time was determined by the Workers Compensation Board to result in his developing ALS.
