More than 70 long-time residents of Abbotsford were honoured on Sunday afternoon at a special event held at Trethewey House.
The MSA Museum Society hosted a "Pioneer Tea" for long-term residents of Abbotsford whose families settled in the Matsqui-Sumas-Abbotsford areas as far back as the 1870s.
A special presentation was made by long-time Matsqui prairie resident Ernie Poignant that had everyone reflecting on Abbotsford’s early beginnings.
Long-standing Valley resident Mayor Bruce Banman, who was raised in Chilliwack, officially welcomed the pioneers and reflected on his family’s ties to Vancouver.
Banman presented an award to 95-year-old Len Hoon, the oldest person in attendance.
Coun. Moe Gill presented an award to 93-year-old Cyril Holbrow, who was born and raised in Clayburn Village.
Pioneers, including former mayor George Ferguson, spent time reminiscing and reflecting on their past, telling stories of what it was like growing up and living in the area.
Many of the families in attendance are featured in the MSA Museum’s book "Pioneer Families," available at the society’s office next to Trethewey House on Ware Street.
