Residents of Mission and Abbotsford will go for gold in the coming months.

Amidst a provincial drought, the Abbotsford Mission Water and Sewer Commission is running a contest to determine the most golden lawns in the area.

To be eligible for the contest, lawns must be kept and mowed but not watered.

All properties must be located in Abbotsford and Mission, while those residing in the Clearbrook Waterworks District are not eligible to participate.

Mission residents will receive $150 for first place, $75 for second and $50 for third. For Abbotsford residents, prize amounts will be awarded in the form of a monetary discount on the next water utility bill account.

Prizes will be chosen by City of Abbotsford staff.

“Bonus points will be awarded to properties that have waterwise alternatives; this could be anything from waterwise perennials to river rock and stones. Bonus points will also be awarded to properties that have vegetable gardens,” a City of Mission news release reads.

To enter the contest, residents must submit their first and last name, up to three photos, the address of the propertyand contact information.

The deadline to submit photos is midnight on Oct. 15 and entry is limited to one contest entry per address. Winners will be announced by Nov. 15.

The Abbotsford Mission Water and Sewer Commission moved to Stage 2 Water Restrictions on July 21. Stage 2 restrictions limit lawn sprinkling to one day a week on weekend mornings only.
