CIVL radio is honouring two dedicated volunteers in name and a Canadian legend in song this week.
The University of the Fraser Valley’s community radio station renamed its studio the Anger-Leslie Broadcast Studio in honour of two hosts who died in 2015.
Chuck Anger, host of Boogety Shoo Blues Show, died in March “due to ongoing health problems.”
“Known to Abbotsford Flea Market patrons, music lovers throughout the Valley, and many involved with Abbotsford’s social services community due to his work with the nationally recognized Abbotsford Streets radio program, Chuck left a legacy at CIVL that includes a strong relationship with the Fraser Valley Blues Society, whose Cora Price hosts Chuck’s trademark blues program to this day,” reads a press release from the station.
Less than two months later, Generation Z Show host Dakota Leslie was hit by a car near Marshall Road and McCallum Road.
In addition to the studio’s new name, the Fraser Valley Music Awards will name its Battle of the Bands Champion the Dakota Leslie Performer of the Year.
Leslie’s family was at the studio Thursday for the mounting of a plaque.
The station then kicked off a tribute to Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie, who died Tuesday, by playing a Hip song every three songs between CIVL hosted and syndicated programs.
“This is a tribute the dedication to diversity and inclusion that Downie showed in his activism and songwriting perspective to the need for youth to get involved in their communities and shape them as they grow together, and to engaging and reflecting the people that make up our neighbourhoods and our nation.”
