Colleen and Dustin Born have organized a fundraiser for BC Children’s Hospital instead of receiving gifts for their son’s first birthday.

An Abbotsford family is holding a fundraiser for BC Children’s Hospital on Saturday, Nov. 23.

The event runs from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Legacy Sports Building, 32470 Haida Drive in Abbotsford.

The celebration will include a bouncy castle, face painting and balloon twisting. Donations are being requested for the hospital.

The event is being hosted by Dustin and Colleen Born, in celebration of the first birthday of their son, Tytus Viktor.

Tytus was born on Nov. 20, 2012 during Colleen’s 33rd week of pregnancy. He weighed 5 lb. 2 oz. and stayed at the neonatal intensive care unit at Abbotsford Regional Hospital (ARH) for two weeks before going home.

Soon after, he developed an illness known as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). While waiting in the emergency department at ARH, Tytus stopped breathing and required treatment by a trauma team.

He was then transferred to BC Children’s Hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit, where he remained for two weeks before he recovered enough to be transferred back to ARH and then home on Dec. 26.

Colleen and Dustin are so thankful for the care that Tytus received that they decided rather than receiving gifts for their son’s first birthday, they would hold a fundraiser.

“We are so thankful for the support we received and for the many who interceded on our behalf,” the couple states on a tribute page on the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation website.

The couple have two other children – Dallas and Zackaus – and are expecting their fourth in April. To donate to the cause or confirm attendance for the fundraiser (including number of people), send an email to tributetotytus@hotmail.com.
