Two groups of girls from a Grade 4 class at Blue Jay Elementary recently raised almost $520 for BC Children’s Hospital and Team Miracle Maya.

The eight girls held four separate events – including selling frozen treats and homemade crafts – over a two-week period and raised $319.75. Someone was so impressed with the efforts that a cheque for $200 was added to the total.

The proposal for a BC Children’s Hospital fundraiser was first discussed in the fall of this school year, but school principal Jim Van Meer asked the girls to delay their efforts due to other fundraisers already scheduled.

“We’re proud of the work these eight girls have done but we’re also proud of the kind of citizens they are becoming; we’re sure they will continue to have an impact on their community in the future,” Van Meer said.

Team Miracle Maya is named for Maya Ahuja, a Blue Jay Elementary student who was born with a congenital heart defect.

Her parents, Gary and Karm, are thankful for the support Maya received at Children’s Hospital, and have set a goal of raising $100,000 for the hospital.
